My Khe vs Han River: What Actually Divides Da Nang

Search for a place to stay in Da Nang and you always get the same answer. Beach for a resort trip, downtown for sightseeing. It gets framed as a matter of taste, but the moment you open a booking page everyone thinks the same thing. The beachfront must cost more.

So we split the numbers ourselves. We took the 477 Da Nang hotels with verified prices and ratings, divided them by coordinates, and tallied the beachfront walkable zone separately from the downtown strip on the west bank of the Han River. Median nightly rate: $26.60 in the My Khe zone, $22.00 downtown. The gap is $4.60. That's two coffees.

Except the side paying that extra $4.60 has a 61% share of 4-star-and-above properties. The side saving it has 26%. In Da Nang, "the beachfront is expensive" is only half true. What's actually expensive sits somewhere else entirely.

Round 1: Price — How Big the Beachfront Premium Really Is

We cut Da Nang into four zones: the beach-walkable My Khe strip, the east bank across the Dragon Bridge, the Hai Chau downtown core on the west bank of the Han, and the resort belt running south toward Non Nuoc.

One row jumps out. The southern resort belt at $110 — 4.1 times the My Khe zone.

That's where the "Da Nang beachfront is expensive" idea came from. When people picture a Da Nang beach resort, they're picturing the five-star properties along the southern coastline, not the downtown beach strip. My Khe is a beach attached to the city center, and two-thirds of its front-row hotels sit under $34.

Compare within the same budget and the gap gets sharper.

The $21–34 band is Da Nang's thickest, and there your odds of a 4-star run 74% vs 32%. More than double. Move up to $34–55 and the gap widens to 77% vs 18%.

The reason is simple. The My Khe front row has absorbed a decade of new builds, while the downtown west bank is mostly older local hotels and apartment-style stays. The inventory itself splits 239 to 84 — three to one.

PÂMA Boutique Hotel & Bistro is the case in point. ★9.3 across 3,623 reviews at $29.30 a night. Its location sub-score of 9.6 sits near the top in Da Nang, and the most repeated review phrase is "walk to the beach." A 4-star at $29.30 buys you a 3-star or worse downtown.

Halina Hotel and Apartment at $27 has 11,614 reviews. The top review phrase is "near the beach" (77 mentions), second is "close to the beach" (57). When ten thousand-plus guests all write about the same thing, that's where the price is attached.

Round 1 winner: My Khe. If $4.60 doubles your odds of a 4-star, this isn't a comparison.

Round 2: Access — What 3km and the Half-Night Stay Flip

This is where it turns around.

Median distance to the beach is 309m in the My Khe zone and 3,096m downtown. Ten times. Stay downtown and the sea becomes a taxi ride. Flip it around and Han Market and the Dragon Bridge are on your doorstep downtown, while from My Khe you're crossing a bridge.

The words guests repeat in reviews track this exactly. My Khe zone reviews cluster on near the beach (249 mentions), close to the beach (240), walk to the beach (200), sea view (190). Downtown reviews cluster on dragon bridge (109), han market (88), han river (44), walking distance (40). Same city, no vocabulary overlap.

Keep scrolling the downtown list, though, and something odd shows up. near airport (27), bit far (25), shuttle bus (23), far from the city (16), close to airport (14). That's a signal that airport-adjacent stays are getting mixed into downtown search results.

This is a Da Nang-specific structure. Flights from Korea mostly land late at night, and the return legs push past midnight. That creates demand for what Korean travelers call a "half-night" — a room for the first and last nights of a trip. After checkout there's still eight to ten hours before the flight.

Properties near the airport have been built for that demand and they file themselves under downtown, which drags the zone's averages sideways. One downtown review says it flatly: booked "just to sit in the center for a bit because the flight home was in the evening." A slice of downtown inventory works as a waiting room, not a base.

For a half-night, downtown clearly wins. Seahorse Signature Danang Hotel by Haviland runs ★9.3 across 3,426 reviews at $35.60. Its staff sub-score of 9.7 is among the highest in Da Nang. At a property built on midnight check-ins and early checkouts, a 9.7 staff score is the whole product.

Sujet Hotel Danang at $17.90 leans into the same demand even harder. ★9.0 across 1,233 reviews for a 3-star, and reviews keep describing it as a boutique hotel tucked into a quiet back alley. If you're sleeping and leaving, there's nothing else to weigh.

Round 2 winner: downtown. Conditionally — only when a half-night is in the itinerary, or Han Market and the Dragon Bridge are the point.

Round 3: Hotel Quality — When Four Booking Sites Disagree

On raw ratings the two zones are nearly tied. My Khe ★8.58, downtown ★8.46. A 0.12 gap means nothing.

What separates them is volume of verification. Hotels with 1,000+ reviews: 91 in the My Khe zone, 27 downtown. Hotels above 9.0: 59 in My Khe (25%), 17 downtown (20%). Among the 9.0-and-up group, the median is $46.90 in My Khe and $35.60 downtown — so here downtown is cheaper.

Put plainly: a 9-point hotel downtown saves you about $11 versus My Khe, but there are a third as many of them. Which means a third of the odds one is still open in peak season.

Cross-reference the booking sites and it gets more interesting. Each platform draws a different nationality mix, so the same hotel scores differently depending on where you look.

San Marino Boutique Danang has 2,542 Trip.com reviews, closing in on its Agoda count of 3,612. Most Da Nang hotels carry a few hundred Trip.com reviews at most, so this is unusual. It means Chinese-speaking travelers stay here in volume — and the property sits right where you'd want to be for the Dragon Bridge at night.

Cozy Danang Boutique Hotel runs the other way: ★9.2 on Agoda but ★9.6 on Expedia. Its review phrases — walking distance (24), han market (13), near dragon bridge (12), rooftop pool (11) — compress the downtown case into four items. If you're spending $56 downtown, this is the benchmark.

Round 3 winner: draw. Ratings are level, verification volume favors My Khe three to one, but the value on 9-point hotels sits downtown.

Round 4: Surroundings — Dinner Decides It

Dinner moves the needle more than a hotel rating does. What you eat after check-in sets the tone for the day.

Downtown wins on density. From Cozy Danang Boutique Hotel, Xom Moi Garden Da Nang (Google ★4.9, 8,077 reviews) is 263m away and Teppanizakaya Hideki (Google ★5.0, 157) is 151m. Getting a 5.0 and a 4.9 inside 400m rarely happens out at the beach.

Seahorse Tropical Danang Hotel by Haviland has Nha Go Viet (Google ★4.9, 5,055) at 120m and Pizza 4P's Indochina Da Nang (Google ★4.9, 9,739) at 250m. A $33.80 room with a near-10,000-review restaurant inside 300m is a structural downtown advantage.

The beach side trades density for a different mix. From Belle Maison Parosand Da Nang, Pink Salt Restaurant (Google ★4.9, 2,211) is 108m out and Hai San Ku Tom (Google ★4.9, 1,786) is 288m. Both seafood. The beach runs on seafood; downtown runs on local and international.

Korean food splits differently too. From Estrella Boutique Hotel, Totoro (Google ★4.9, 2,331) is 293m and All Seasons Buffet (Google ★4.9, 2,712) is 229m. The back streets of My Khe carry plenty of Korean-oriented restaurants.

Crowne Plaza Danang City Centre by IHG has Umeyaki BBQ Buffet (Google ★5.0, 2,666) 39m from the door. Effectively next door.

Daytime activities come with pickup wherever you stay. The Ba Na Hills and Golden Bridge day tour runs $53.60 (★4.6, 4,021 bookings) and the Marble Mountains plus Hoi An combo runs $23.40 (★4.4, 1,847). Hoi An is 40 minutes by car, so if a Hoi An day trip is on the list, hotel location barely matters.

Round 4 winner: downtown. On restaurant density within 300m, it isn't close.

The Verdict: It Depends on Budget and Itinerary

Add the rounds up and it's 2-1 with a draw. But nobody books on aggregate score. Here it is by situation.

Under $34, two nights or more
My Khe. No reason to look elsewhere. PÂMA Boutique Hotel & Bistro at $29.30 (★9.3, 3,623) or The HEM Apartment & Hotel at $32.80 (★9.3, 2,591) both get you a 4-star within walking distance of the sand. The HEM scores 9.6 with couples (940 reviews) and 9.7 with families traveling with teens (22) — above its overall rating.

$34–55, traveling with kids
Golden Lotus Hotel Da Nang Rooftop Bar Sea View at $38.70 (★9.3, 4,669) is the most stable option in the data. Families with young children rate it 9.5 across 891 reviews, and groups rate it 9.5 across 1,219. A family score of 9.5 on nearly 900 reviews isn't luck.

$55 and up, couples
Estrella Boutique Hotel at $60.40 (★9.3, 6,044). Cleanliness 9.6, value 9.5, staff 9.6 — evenly high sub-scores, and all four booking sites clear 9.

Late-night arrival or pre-dawn departure
Downtown. Sujet Hotel Danang at $17.90 or Seahorse Han Market Danang Apartment by Haviland at $53.90 both fit. The latter has a 9.6 location sub-score and reviews that keep naming Han Market and the Dragon Bridge.

Four nights or more
Split it. Two nights at the beach, two downtown or on the east bank, and you get both faces of the city without a real transfer cost. Da Nang is under 15 minutes end to end by taxi.

Three Cases Where Downtown Wins

Losing on price doesn't retire downtown. Three situations where it clearly wins.

One: September onward. Da Nang's dry season runs February through August; the wet season starts in September. Late September through late October is peak typhoon window, and Da Nang is among the Vietnamese cities hit hardest. When it rains, half the value of a beachfront hotel evaporates. There's no point being on the sand you can't use. Downtown keeps Han Market, Indochina Riverside Mall and its restaurant cluster intact regardless. Two: night markets and night views. The Dragon Bridge fire show only runs on weekends, and the stalls around Han Market don't really get going until after 10pm. Better to sleep next to it than to taxi back across the bridge every night.

Three: budgets above $55. In the $55–103 band, downtown averages ★8.95 against My Khe's ★8.87. The 4-star share evens out too — 88% downtown versus 85% at the beach. Raise the budget and downtown's disadvantage disappears. Crowne Plaza Danang City Centre by IHG at $107.60 or Signature by M Village Danang Heritage at $64.10 (cleanliness sub-score 9.7) are the picks in this band.

There's one more thing. New inventory has started landing downtown. Sujet Center Hotel by Haviland opened in January 2026, 700m from Indochina Riverside Mall. It's already at ★9.2 across 142 reviews and costs $18.40. If downtown's weakness was aging stock, that premise is shifting.

The Third Zone: The East Bank Answer

Look at a map and Da Nang actually has a third zone: An Hai, across the Dragon Bridge on the east bank. 1.4km to the beach, walking distance to the bridge. Sounds like a compromise. The numbers say otherwise.

Median nightly rate is $17.50, the cheapest of the three, and 84% sit under $34. The share of hotels above 9.0 is 24% — essentially level with My Khe's 25% — but the median price of those 9-point hotels is $18.40. That's 40% of what My Khe's 9-point group costs ($46.90).

The traveler-type breakdown is distinctive. Solo travelers rate the east bank 9.02, highest of the three zones. Couples give it 8.86. The trade-off shows in room comfort, where its 7.40 sub-score is the lowest of the three. Rooms are small and dated; location and price cover for it.

Sujet Beach Hotel and Apartment Danang by Haviland runs $18 at ★9.2 (1,035 reviews), with a solo-traveler score of 9.7 across 226 reviews. Glamour Hotel Da Nang sits at ★8.8 (1,594) for $60.40, though a Korean-language YouTube review titles it "breakfast and a pool for $21." That's nearly triple the gap between the video's reference price and today's, so this one swings hard depending on when you book.

For a five-star on the river, Melia Vinpearl Danang Riverfront is $107.50 (★9.0, 8,416). Expedia gives it ★9.2 (1,001) and Trip.com ★9.1 (530), both above Agoda — foreign guests rate it higher. Its top review phrases are han river and river view, so the name is the product.

Straight Talk: Watch Out for These

Some numbers look good until you open them up.

Miami Beach Hotel — At ★9.3 on Agoda (550 reviews), $20.90, walkable to My Khe, it reads great. Then Booking has it at ★7.2 (38) and Expedia at ★7.8 (49). A 2.1-point spread. The sub-scores explain it: cleanliness 6.8, facilities 6.5, staff 7.1, value 7.1. The headline is 9.3 and every component is at or below 7. Treat it as a 2-star at a 2-star price.

Hotel Minh Truong — ★9.5 on Agoda across 2,315 reviews at $13.80. On paper, the best value in Da Nang. But the sub-scores read cleanliness 7.7, facilities 7.3, location 7.9, value 7.7. A gap that wide between a 9.5 headline and 7-point components is rare. The coordinates explain it: longitude 108.1975, well west of the Han River, out past the airport. Book it as "downtown" and Han Market is a taxi ride. That's what the 16 mentions of "far from the city" in downtown reviews are pointing at.

Fusion Resort & Villas Da Nang — A $171.30 five-star resort. Cleanliness 9.8, staff 9.7, room comfort 9.5 — top-tier facilities for Da Nang. The problem is location at 8.6. The southern resort belt averages 8.02 on location, last of the four zones, because that's how the zone is built. The nearest 4.9-rated restaurant is 3.7km out; popular spots like Missteak are 9.3km. Leaving means a taxi, every time. Right for three days inside the resort, wrong for anyone eating out nightly.

Wink Hotel Danang Riverside — ★8.8 (3,425) at $60.40. Not a bad hotel. But the same brand's Wink Hotel Danang Centre is ★9.0 (9,892) at $48.50 with a 9.7 location sub-score. Twelve dollars cheaper, higher rated, three times the reviews. Booking on brand alone costs you here.

One last thing. A My Khe zone review put it this way: "Don't waste money on a hotel right on the beach. This one delivers value one street back." The gap between the front row and one block in is real. If an ocean-view room isn't the point, moving 100–300m inland gets you the same class for less. Methodology

HotelPing compiled this piece by cross-aggregating rating and review data from Agoda, Booking.com, Trip.com and Expedia alongside our own price collection, as of July 31, 2026. Of 477 Da Nang hotels, the 391 with both price and rating confirmed and at least 10 reviews were sorted into four zones by coordinates, with boundaries set at the Han River (longitude 108.228) and the My Khe shoreline (longitude 108.238). Distance to the beach is a straight-line approximation from the shoreline longitude. Prices are total-per-night at time of query, so actual booking rates vary by date and room class. Converted at 1 USD = 1,450 KRW.

The beach. On a first visit you want both, and My Khe to downtown is a 10-minute taxi while downtown to the beach is 3km. Stay on the closer side. Under $34 there's nothing to debate: your odds of a 4-star at the same price split 74% to 32%.

Q. Isn't beachfront in Da Nang expensive?

Not the downtown beach strip. Those 239 hotels have a median of $26.60 and 65% sit under $34. What's expensive is the southern resort belt toward Non Nuoc, at a median of $110. The "Da Nang beachfront is pricey" belief comes from that belt.
